Shipping from Dubai to Ivory Coast guide to Abidjan costs and customs

The Port of Abidjan handled 46.6 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, up 16.1 percent on the year, plus 1.6 million TEUs of containers, according to Ecofin Agency. That makes it West Africa's busiest port by tonnage and the natural gateway for shipping from Dubai to Ivory Coast. This guide covers what the lane typically costs by mode, how long it really takes from Jebel Ali, the cargo tracking note and duty stack Ivorian customs applies, and when LCL or air beats a full container.

In practice, most importers book a 20ft or 40ft container from Jebel Ali to Abidjan at typically USD 2,200 to 4,300, plan on 34 to 45 days door to port, and clear through the national single window with a BSC registered before the vessel arrives. Smaller loads go LCL, and urgent cargo flies in about a week.

What shipping from Dubai to Ivory Coast costs#

The ocean rate is only one line, but it is the one most buyers ask about first. These are planning ranges for 2026, not a rate card; fuel, peak season and congestion surcharges move them, so every booking needs a dated quote.

ModeTypical 2026 planning rangeRealistic transit
20ft FCL, Jebel Ali to AbidjanUSD 2,200 to 3,40034 to 45 days door to port
40ft FCL, Jebel Ali to AbidjanUSD 2,900 to 4,30034 to 45 days door to port
LCL, per CBMUSD 80 to 150Add consolidation time both ends
Air freight, 100 kg plusUSD 5 to 9 per kg4 to 8 days door to door

On top of freight, budget for Abidjan terminal handling, the delivery order, scanning, your clearing agent and inland trucking. Those destination lines vary by terminal and cargo type, which is why we quote them itemised rather than buried in an "all in" number. The same budgeting method is laid out step by step in our Dubai to Ghana cost guide.

Transit times from Jebel Ali to Abidjan#

Very few sailings from Jebel Ali run direct to Côte d'Ivoire. Most services transship at a hub such as Salalah, Jeddah or Tanger Med, which is why port to port schedules of 23 to 30 days become 34 to 45 days once you count the wait for a vessel and the discharge queue. Our UAE to West Africa ocean freight guide compares this lane with Tema, Lagos, Dakar and Douala.

Abidjan is the main port, run by the Port Autonome d'Abidjan, and its container volumes have roughly doubled since a second container terminal opened in 2022. San Pedro in the west handles much of the cocoa trade and some general cargo. For importers in Burkina Faso or Mali, Abidjan is also the start of the road and rail corridor north, so transit cargo can be quoted through to the border.

Ivorian customs: the BSC, GUCE and the duty stack#

Côte d'Ivoire clears imports electronically through GUCE, the national single window for foreign trade. Two things trip up first time importers on this lane.

The BSC comes before arrival. Every sea import needs a Bordereau de Suivi des Cargaisons, the electronic cargo tracking note issued under the Office Ivoirien des Chargeurs. It is raised against the bill of lading at origin and must be validated before the vessel reaches Abidjan; a missing BSC means the cargo cannot clear, and the container sits on demurrage while you fix it.

Duty is assessed on CIF value. Côte d'Ivoire applies the ECOWAS common external tariff, with duty bands of 0, 5, 10, 20 or 35 percent by product, a 1 percent statistical fee, community levies and 18 percent VAT on the CIF value plus duties, as summarised in the US Commercial Service country guide. An illustrative example for goods in the 20 percent band:

LineBasisOn USD 20,000 CIF
Customs duty20% of CIFUSD 4,000
Statistical fee1% of CIFUSD 200
Community and solidarity leviesabout 1.5% of CIFUSD 300
VAT18% of CIF plus the lines aboveUSD 4,410
Total taxes (illustrative)about USD 8,910

Your HS code decides the band, so classify before you buy, not after the vessel lands. Because the base is CIF, the Incoterm on your supplier invoice matters less than many buyers think; our FOB vs CIF guide explains why. The core paperwork (commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificates) follows our Africa customs documents checklist, and clear French product descriptions save time with Abidjan brokers.

LCL, consolidation and air for smaller loads#

Below roughly 15 CBM, a shared container usually beats a full one. Our Dubai consolidation and warehousing service collects goods from several Dubai suppliers, checks them against the invoices, and ships them on one bill of lading with one BSC, so you clear once in Abidjan instead of three times.

Air makes sense for samples, spare parts, phones and fast moving stock. Many importers fly the urgent 10 to 20 percent of an order and sail the rest; the air versus ocean freight comparison runs the numbers for that split. For the full list of modes we handle, see our freight services.
