Ocean Freight from the UAE to West Africa: Routes, Transit Times and Costs

Sailing schedules, realistic transit times and the cost lines that actually move on Jebel Ali to Tema, Lagos and Abidjan — plus how to avoid the demurrage that erases your savings.

Jebel Ali is the natural consolidation point for cargo moving into West Africa. It connects to almost every major line, it clears quickly, and it lets you combine Asian, European and Gulf-origin cargo into a single southbound shipment.

What it doesn't do is make the transit predictable on its own. Here's how the route actually behaves.

Transit times you can plan against#

Carrier schedules quote port-to-port sailing time. The number you should plan against includes the wait for a suitable vessel and the discharge queue at the other end.

LanePort-to-portRealistic door-to-port
Jebel Ali → Tema (Ghana)21–28 days32–42 days
Jebel Ali → Lagos/Apapa (Nigeria)24–32 days38–50 days
Jebel Ali → Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire)23–30 days34–45 days
Jebel Ali → Dakar (Senegal)25–33 days36–48 days
Jebel Ali → Douala (Cameroon)26–34 days38–50 days

Almost nothing on this corridor is a direct sailing. Most services transship — commonly at Salalah, Jeddah, Algeciras or Tanger Med — and each transship is a point where a missed connection costs you a week.

What actually drives the cost#

The ocean rate is rarely the line that varies most between quotes. These are:

  • Destination port charges. THC, delivery order fees and terminal handling at West African ports are significant and vary sharply by port.
  • Demurrage and detention. Free time is typically 7–14 days. Beyond that, daily charges accrue per container and escalate in tiers.
  • Congestion and peak-season surcharges. Applied by lane, often at short notice.
  • Inspection and scanning fees. Mandatory at several ports regardless of cargo type.
  • Currency and payment friction. FX availability at destination can delay duty payment, which in turn creates demurrage.

FCL or LCL?#

The break-even point is lower than most shippers assume. As a rough guide:

  • Under 8–10 CBM — LCL is usually cheaper, but adds 5–10 days for consolidation and deconsolidation at both ends.
  • 10–15 CBM — genuinely borderline. Compare total landed cost, and weigh the extra handling risk of LCL for fragile cargo.
  • Over 15 CBM — a 20ft FCL is normally both cheaper and faster.

LCL also exposes you to other shippers' problems: if one consignment in the groupage container is held for inspection, everything in that box waits.

Getting the paperwork right the first time#

Most delays trace back to a mismatch between documents, not a missing document. The consignee name, HS codes, quantities and values must agree exactly across:

  • Commercial invoice
  • Packing list
  • Bill of Lading
  • Certificate of Origin
  • Any pre-shipment inspection or conformity certificate the destination requires

Several West African markets require a conformity assessment programme certificate issued before shipment. Obtaining one after the vessel sails is expensive and slow, and in some cases impossible.

Practical steps that shorten the cycle#

  1. Book against a named sailing, not a week. Cut-off dates are firm.
  2. Send draft documents early so the consignee's clearing agent can pre-file.
  3. Confirm the duty payment route before arrival — FX availability is a real constraint in several markets.
  4. Nominate one point of contact at destination. Split responsibility is why containers sit.
  5. Track proactively. Knowing about a missed transship on day 12 gives you options; finding out on day 30 does not.

Our ocean freight service covers the UAE side end to end — booking, consolidation, export documentation and pre-alerts to your consignee — and our supply chain solutions extend that to inland delivery where the destination allows it.
